A planned or deferred gift is a major gift that comes from sources other than current spendable income. Bequests, gifts of insurance, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities and pooled income fund contributions are all examples of planned gifts. A planned gift is generally part of a total estate plan and is based on total assets. Planned gifts are not new. Over the last hundred years, millions of dollars have been pledged or left to the Red Cross by people who wanted to support its ongoing humanitarian work.
